Dynamic Dialogue

It can be challenging to perceive and influence change in groups, organizations and communities. Often, disparate voices herald seemingly divergent aspirations, problems, and future scenarios. What looks promising to parties in one realm, looks dangerous or foolish to colleagues in another part of the system. The dynamic complexity of constant crises, plus imperatives to transform or face failure, make it extremely difficult for anyone to know what to do, or how to influence the future trajectory of a collective, especially during times of transition.

Dynamic Dialogue is one way through this veil of complexity. It is a reliable method for a group to illuminate the evolving essence or dynamic purpose underneath diverse, even competing perspectives. Dynamic Dialogue can quickly reveal how an organization is undergoing a shift in the nature of its purpose, product and core architecture. It also offers a way for a group to generate and experiment with something entirely new.

Dynamic Dialogue combines strategic introspection and serious play. As a method for strategic introspection, it allows participants to reframe seeming chaos, notice and come to terms with what is ending, and focus on growing emergent opportunities. As a method of serious play, Dynamic Dialogue provides a creative, yet rigorous way for diverse stakeholders to work "on" the system, not just in it.

Dynamic Dialogue By using simulations and prototypes, participants discover and test (current or new) ways of being/working, including system-wide ripple effects. Participants interact with alternative scenarios and future possibilities, and in the process discover what they want and need (e.g., from an evolving new service or organizational structure). Similarly, solutions emerge as participants test out proposals for change and discover what happens as the whole system reveals impacts. This collective creation activity, combined with focused reflection, provides a window into a system's shifting identity, its efforts to evolve as a whole, and potential risks and benefits associated with change.

Dynamic Dialogue is a powerful methodology for mobilizing commitment. As promising prototypes take shape, and participants discover how their local decisions and actions mesh with the needs and directions of the whole, these simulations create a powerful pull for the future. People learn from first-hand experience how various approaches lead to different scenarios in the future, which signals and cues might suggest a shift of course, and how to optimize both their local interests and the viability of the larger, whole system.
